    program notes:

    I Shall Not Forget was originally composed in 2017 as a choral setting of White Pansies by Canadian poet, Archibald Lampman. Lampman wrote the poem in 1894 in response to the death of his young son, Arnold. The darkly beautiful imagery and profound sadness of the text are a solemn reminder to never take any moment for granted, and had an anguished, lamenting quality that spoke to me in a way I felt needed to be expressed musically, more specifically: as a melancholy lullaby. This band re-orchestration was created in 2021 and is suitable for a developing or more advanced band.

    original text:

    Archibald Lampman (1862-1899)

    White Pansies

    Day and night pass over, rounding,
    Star and cloud and sun,
    Things of drift and shadow, empty
    Of my dearest one.

    Soft as slumber was my baby,
    Beaming bright and sweet;
    Daintier than bloom or jewel
    Were his hands and feet.

    He was mine, mine all, mine only,
    Mine and his debt;
    Earth and Life and Time are changers;
    I shall not forget.

    Pansies for my dear one — heartsease —
    Set them gently so;
    For his stainless lips and forehead,
    Pansies white as snow.

    Would that in the flower-grown little
    Grave they dug so deep,
    I might rest beside him, dreamless,
    Smile no more, nor weep.

    (1894)

    HOME/OFFICE PREPARATION

    If 11x14 printing size is not available to the purchaser, this sizing scales down fairly well to either 9x12 (a common concert band score size) or 8.5x11 (standard US Letter). This can be accomplished by selecting “Fit Pages” or “Fit to Printable Area” in your computer’s printing specifications window.

    NOTE: Avoid using the “Shrink oversized pages” option as this will not appropriately re-format the smaller text-based pages of the booklet (which are set to 8.5x11).

    NOTE: Scaling down to 8.5x11 is not recommended for large ensemble scores (due to legibility concerns), but if it is your only option, it will work! In any case, make sure to select “Fit Pages” or “Fit to Printable Area” before printing.

    NOTE: If conserving ink, select print range that excludes the first two pages and last two pages of the score (the “Inside Covers” will become the new covers)
